Cocteau meets Picasso

Private collection of Ioannis Kontaxopoulos

Pablo Picasso Art Museum, Münster, Germany

On the occasion of the 100th “birthday” of the friendship between Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso, the Pablo Picasso Art Museum, Münster is presenting this unique special exhibition in which Cocteau’s paintings, illustrations, poems and films enter into a breathtaking dialogue with the museum’s holdings. The friends had the same interests all their lives, from their common work for the theatre through their enthusiasm for antiquity and mythological subjects to their shared passion for the bullfight, and through them they influenced each other’s art. The exhibition, conceived as a dialogue, combines loans from a prestigious European private collection, some items of which have never been shown in Germany before, with exhibits by one of the most versatile of the neo-classical artists, of whom Klaus Mann once wrote “Jean Cocteau is one the myths of our supranational brotherhood: his namelike that of the young André Gide, of Kafka, of Picassowas one of the shibboleths by which young aesthetes from Cambridge to Cairo recognised each other.
