A contemporary perspective on the tragic conflict in Sophocles’ tragedy

A dance-theatre performance based on original music composition

At the central stage of Michael Cacoyannis Foundation for two performances:

26 & 27 April 2025, at 21:00

A few words about the performance:

Through the art of contemporary dance and music, this artistic creation is a fusion of speech, movement and music. It seeks to express the psychological state of the tragedy’s characters while also exploring the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from it. The performance aims to investigate the coexistence of human nature and power, as well as the delicate balance between individuality and collective responsibility in modern society.

The contemporary dance choreographies, combining technique and expressive interpretation, convey the conflicts emerging from this ancient tragedy and present them in a new dimension relevant to the contemporary era.

The music composition is an original creation inspired by the intense emotions that surface from the dramatic conflicts in this work by Sophocles. It is an integral part of the performance, interweaving electronic and acoustic soundscapes enriched with speech and song lyrics based on the ancient text, freely rendered in modern Greek. In certain moments, the original ancient text is narrated and set to music.

A few words about ECHODRAMA Cultural Group:

The main activity of ECHODRAMA Cultural Group is the production and presentation of dance-theatre performances inspired by Greek literature, philosophy and history. The group collaborates with distinguished dancers from Greece and abroad (Germany, France, Latin America).

Previous productions include: “The Cave” (inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave from The Republic) and “Rhei” (inspired by Heraclitus’ concept of perpetual motion). Both were successfully presented at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation Theatre and various municipal theatres in Attica and other regions of Greece. Additionally, the group created three dance-theatre performances based on Alexandros Papadiamantis’ novels and short stories: “The Murderess” (I Fonissa), “Eros-Hero” (Eros-Iros) and “Dream on the Wave” (Oneiro sto Kyma). These were performed in municipal theatres in Attica and other regions. “The Murderess” was also staged in 11 major cities in Germany, while “Eros-Hero” participated in the Erfurt International Dance-Theatre Festival. The group’s most recent production, “Asia Minor”, was funded by the Greek Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Greek National Opera and was presented in theatres across mainland and island Greece.

Members of ECHODRAMA Cultural Group have collaborated artistically with Amnesty International, The American Red Cross, Deutsche Oper am Rhein (in Düsseldorf), Tanztheater Erfurt (in Erfurt), Theater Bonn (in Bonn).
