The Michael Cacoyannis Foundation is organizing the 7th Silent Film Festival, entitled Love and Eroticism in Silent Film from Wednesday 22 June until Friday 1st July 2016, at 21:30, with the artistic direction of Alexandros Mouzas.
Silent film was the first teacher to and great love of Michael Cacoyannis. The great director himself oversaw the first two Silent Film Festivals at his Foundation, and the MCF continues the tradition he created by preparing the Festival each year and screening masterpieces which laid the foundations for the art of cinema.
At the same time, as was done during those first years of cinema without sound, young composers adorn the black and white frames with original compositions which will be interpreted live, next to the big screen, thus amplifying the atmosphere of each film by emphasizing situations and emotions
For the 7th Silent Film Festival, the music has been composed by: Natalia Mavraki, Argyro Koliogiorgi, Panagiotis Theodosiou, Leonidas Kanaris, Spyros Deligiannopoulos, Yannis Loukos, Marina Tzouli and the DJ Eleni Mitsiaki.
Performed by: Dionysis Mallouchos, Christoforos Mirosnikov, Stella Tsani, Spyros Deligiannopoulos, Nasos Martzoukos, Giorgos Theodoropoulos, Maro Fragkouli, Costas Karageorgopoulos, Filandros Karras, Manos Kitsikopoulos, Stathis Kiosoglou, Alexandros Makris, Giorgos Arnis, Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, Ilias Sdoukos, Maria Katsoura, Rania Michalopoulou, Stephanos Theodorakis, Giannis Loukos, Lefki Kolovou, Eleftheria Toya, Michalis Papageorgiou, Panagiotis Nikolakis, Michalis Yavris.
Alexandros Mouzas says about the 7th Silent Film Festival: The eroticism of silent film is subconscious, allusive, disguised, and is supported by the irresistible charm of the leading ladies or the enchanting gaze of the men. There is a constant battle between that which is proper and acceptable and that which is not, between censorship and social acceptance.
The naked, forbidden fruit of the times, is rarely on display, if at all. A passionate embrace, a furtive glance, a slight sway of the body, is enough to fuel the voyeuristic imagination of the audience. This is the usual practice in fiction films, however does not apply to films of documentary type, such as Moana and Tabu, where nudity is quite evident on the pretext of that which is exotic and curious.
This years festival attempts to map the erotic element as it was evident in these great films by great creators, in different genres, from comedy to drama to adventure and exotic tales. Accompanied by original musical compositions which will be performed live during the screenings, another dimension and stimulus is offered to the audience in order to enhance the atmosphere of the times.
