THE TRUE APOLOGY OF SOCRATES
BY COSTAS VARNALIS
An all-weather political and musical act
Direction: Enke Fezollari
Socrates: Stamatis Kraounakis
The True apology of Socrates employs the historical event of the trial of
the Athenian philosopher to exercise criticism on exploitation and loss
of free will, yet without idealising a devastated people. The prose is
exceptionally moulded, however the play retains its vibrance and
freshness as if it had been written on the spur of the moment. His play
being perhaps the most perfect sample of unspoiled demotic language
within Greek literature, as well as a prime work of biting catalytic
satire – Varnalis at the same time demonstrates, without however
boasting, his rare archaeognosia.

The True Apology of Socrates, this political act, returns from Thursday 23 October to Sunday 16 November 2014 at the Theatre Hall of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. In order the poets message be spread everywhere.
The Apology of Socrates is a fierce and fiery work; cynical, fun and sweet, a blend of lyricism and sarcasm.
The apology is an attempt at reinstating Socrates moral standing. Each
of us, within ourselves, hide a Socrates who will decide to make a war
and throw himself, without return, into battle.
The performance focuses on the eruptive character of Socrates as created by the great Greek poet, Costas Varnalis. It is with this character that the Greek composer and this-time actor, Stamatis Kraounakis, identifies.
An apology, recital. A musical street theatre.
The
demotic Greek language and archaeognosia of Varnalis dance together as
one. The work constitutes a mainstream through artistic revolution and
is considered one of the greatest Greek poetic texts.
As I enjoy myself, I revel in biting you the hero cries whilst staring into the eyes of the suppressors of human existence.
Stamatis Kraounakis plays the Varnalic Socrates.
The
artists of Speira-Speira share with him the words of Varnalis,
sometimes as students, sometimes as thieves, sometimes as future
generations, as prosecutors, as the people, as little Socrates.
Magnificantly they sing the lyrical and epic odes, set to music by Aris Vlachos.
As director and guide, Enke Fezollari.
The flag-ship text of Poet Costas Varnalis comes at this time to remind, to satire and to sink deep a finger into the wound.
Free citizens, our country is our own, but nothing of it belongs to us, all is foreign
