“ODE TO ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS”
Script – Direction: Dimos Avdeliodis
Based on the book by Kostas Mardas,
ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS, Death Rehearsals
The songs of the performance by the voice of Pantelis Thalassinos
With Eleni Erimou
According to the great turnout for the theatrical performance that has been written and directed by Dimos Avdeliodis and starring Eleni Erimou, a second performance is going to be presented on Friday 12th of April 2013, at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation Theatre (21:00). The theatrical text of the play has been based on Kostas Madras book ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS, Death Rehearsals and it is an artistic remembrance of Alekos Panagoulis heroic, political and poetical personality.
Dimos Avdeliodis notes:
Culture
cannot be constructed only by ideas; actions are of great importance
too. Actions verify the true nature of these ideas.
Democracy
is the practical result of ideas and culture, and it could not be
applied without struggle and rebellion against any tyrannical regime,
even in its birthplace – Ancient Greece. Democracy is an important
institution that cannot be taken for granted and in 1967, Greek
Democracy was abolished by a group of unfaithful generals.
The family of Athina and Vassilis Panagoulis
with their three children George, Alexandros and Stathis, they were all
dedicated to the struggle for freedom and democracy, without any own
benefit.
Alexandros Panagoulis, student at the University of Engineering,
was inspired by the ancient Athenian oath for the protection of the
Democracy and he tried to blow up dictators vehicle. It is almost
certain that his unconscious prevented him from murdering. His soul
could not endure the guilt of a murder and he withstood major physical
and emotional torments instead.
His superhuman persistence can
only be compared to Prometheus stamina. Panagoulis said: I will make
it through! If I win, Democracy will be the winner. Perhaps, Alexandros
survived through his devotion to a vivid idea.
The performance tries
to depict the inner, tragic and altruistic spirit of Panagoulis family
through Eleni Erimous transformations into all characters of the play.
In addition, the cinematic sequences are the depiction of the memories
of the characters and they are accompanied by the live-played melodies
of 5 musicians, just like in the old silent film screenings.
