Honorary thanks to Michael Cacoyannis for his contribution to Greek culture by the cinema family

An important night for Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, its people as well as partners, was previous Tuesday, May 3rd, when the family of Greek cinema chose Michael Cacoyannis in order to express honorary “thanks” through a symbolic award for his contribution to Greek culture.

The Honorary Prize was awarded to the director Michael Cacoyannis following a decision taken by the Greek cinematographers, members of the Hellenic Film Academy in the line of the 2nd award ceremony for 2011.

Antonis Kafetzopoulos, member of the HFA board, undertook the responsibility to express the feelings of appreciation, gratitude as well as respect that his colleagues have for Michael Cacoyannis. Furthemore he highlighted, among others, the importance of M. Cacoyannis’ work, thanks to the range that characterizes it, a range that makes him probably the most acknowledged ambassador of Greek cinema.

Antonis Kafetzopoulos during his introducing speech addressed to the vibrant audience that was present at the main hall of Onassis Foundation Cultural Centre, referred to the great moments of the artistic work of Michael Cacoyannis. He stressed out that it is an honor for Hellenic Film Academy to award this prize to the artist who among others was twice nominated for Foreign Film Oscar, who won three Golden Globes (two of them following one another at 55 & 56), while he was nominated for 7 Oscars, among them the Best Motion Picture and Best Direction ones.

Moreover after making reference to the rich translating and directing work of his for theatre, made special reference for the directors choice to establish Michael Cacoyannis Foundation and built its Cultural Centre. As he mentioned to devote in 2004, all of his assets, his name and his fortune, again to the arts. He created Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, he ensured that it would have all the means to make progress independently and be open and particularly collective emphasizing to young creators work.

Yannoula Cacoyannis Wakefield was present to the event, as a partner, co producer as well as beloved sister of the director in order to receive the award as well as transfer the wishes of the Academys members to the honorary person, Michael Cacoyannis.
