The American comes back for just two last performances

In direction of Thanasis Sarantos – By Theatre Company “Ithikon Akmaiotaton”

The American, a performance created to pay homage to Alexandros Papadiamantis, our Dostoyevsky, as Thanassis Sarantos characterizes him, returns, for just two last performances at Theatre Hall of Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, on Sunday, March 13th 2011. A theatrical adaptation of the homonym classic short-story that attempts to introduce us, again, to the magical world of the great writers, coming from Skiathos Island, language and suggests to experience, once more, the feelings of longing as well as ideal love. A dramatized narration that invites us to feel cosmopolitan citizens through the perspective of a Cosmic Monk as well as win, in the end, the feeling of an inner calmness against the voices of an era of superficiality, as the director and actor himself highlights.

A theatrical adaptation of the homonymous classic novel of Alexandros Papadiamandis, by the Theatre Company Ithikon Akmaiotaton in the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the writers death, that involves an actor and a musician, who remind us the dimensions of the human solitude and the uncured suspicion over against the unknown or the seemingly strange.

The hero is a stranger in his own world. Of course, he is neither a stranger nor an American. He is a Greek emigrant who after 25 years of absence returns back to his island but no one recognizes him. He wonders by himself alongside the port, the islands alleys and faces his family house ruins. Only love is what he hopes for. The American could easily be the story of an immigrant in Greece, today.

In the performance Thanasis Sarantos, as the narrator, interprets the character of Alexandros Papadiamandis novel in cooperation with the music and the sounds of the composer Lambros Pigounis.

A dialogue of Papadiamandis exceptional writing with live music. The atmospheric music of the piano in coherence to the language used in this classic novel make a unique theatre performance.
