Giorgos Koumendakis & DissonArt Ensemble – Unknown Dialects: 8 lectures in music

Giorgos Koumendakis & DissonArt Ensemble

It is eight music works, eight music letters, eight theatrical performances, eight music lectures. Without a doubt, it is an extremely interesting approach of the latest, brand new, music work of Giorgos Koumendakis by DissonArt Ensemble. A performance that promises to let us become witnesses of an open dialogue between the Greek music tradition and the present times that we all live in. Having as starting-point the brand new music creation by Giorgos Koumendakis, a group of young artists, the DissonArt Ensemble, presents at Theater Hall of Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, a performance of music theatre, in which the musicians of DissonArt Ensemble become actors, overcoming the limits that are set by their own art. This way, they actually accomplish to carry into effect the concept post-action (metapraxis) that firstly was used by Giannis Christou.

With scripts by Giannis Svolos, directed by Alexandros Efklidis, and with costumes and stage, designed by Petros Touloudis, the performance Unknown dialects: 8 music lectures implements a new idiom between music and theater, where theatrical action, performed by musicians, attempts narration and exploration of the story that lies behind every music work.

A dialogue with tradition, nowadays, is a difficult matter. Giorgos Koumendakis attempted that with various works of him, trying to highlight music tradition as a substance of today, sensing in the music material the global dimension, beyond any national use and possession. The various music dialects of the Greek music tradition discuss in the framework of the eight music works and shape the backbone of the performance including diverse forms and idioms.
