12 & 13 February at 8:00 pm
Following the outsdanding success of the multimedia performance “Images of Music” at the UNESCO Hall in Paris and enthusiastic reviews by an international multicultural audience, Costas Cacoyannis, nephew and the last music partner of internationally acclaimed director Michael Cacoyannis, appears for the first time on the Foundation’s stage. Alongside DIASTASIS and his closest associates, Cacoyannis launches the European tour of the show on the 12 and 13 February 2019.
Costas Cacoyannis, Cyprus’ one-man-orchestra according to the BBC, is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant contemporary Cypriot composers, now celebrating 30 years of music creation. Cacoyannis succeeded from early on in crafting an idiomatic composition style that combines the traditional music of Cyprus with elaborate sounds of European music. His career spans a wide range of collaborations from Los Angeles to Vietnam with homages to his work from international networks such as China’s state CCTV6 channel and the BBC. Today he lives and works on the mountains of Troodos, Cyprus, where together with litterateur Pambos Kouzalis he has founded “Parakentro”, a non-for-profit cultural organization. Costas Cacoyannis has composed music for more than 50 TV productions, 30 stage performances and 15 feature films. His songs have been performed by acclaimed singers such as Alcestis Protopsalti, George Dalaras, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Johnny Logan, Yannis Kotsiras, Alexia, Michalis Hadjiyannis etc.
For a selection of these songs Cacoyannis has set to music poems by his close associate, Pambos Kouzalis, by Cyprus’ leading poet Demetris Lipertis and also by Michael Cacoyannis. The songs will be performed live with stage direction and lighting by Marios Papadopoulos. Performing on stage are: the 35-member choir of Diastasis under the direction of Andriana Serghidou; the 10-member ballet of Diastasis with choreography by Nadina Loizidou, Maria Mesi Angelidou and Eleni O’Keefe; sopranos Maria Papaioannou and Irene Cacoyanni; actress Mara Constantinou and Constantinos Melidis. Also participating is composer and singer Nicholas Metaxas. The complex sound design has been created by Andreas Georgallis.
Costas Cacoyannis will play the piano, violin, flute and “pithkiavli” [traditional Cypriot flute] alongside an orchestra of highly skilled musicians: Constantinos Makaritis (flute and recorder), Mariliza Papadouri (violoncello), George Spyrou (bouzouki, lute, mandolin), Costas Petrides (accordion) and poet Pambos Kouzalis (recitation and percussion).
