DRAWING BLOCK with Christos Callow

DRAWING BLOCK with Christos Callow

A performance in…sepia, based on narrative poetry of Kostas Kartelias and original music by Michalis Gregoriou. The poetic narration of a man who watches everyday life but yet recalls his memory, becomes the theatrical material that illustrates in kaleidoscopic manner the memories, the coherence and the thoughts of the protagonist, plays with time in a subterranean way or subtly places the co-protagonist of the narrator the definite protagonist a Woman: this is the “Drawing Block”, a play based on the poetry collection with same title of Kostas Kartelias (Aigokeros Publications, 2014) with the original music written or inspired by the same  poems, the composer Michalis Gregoriou with the dramatic processing and direction of Anna Sotrini, premiers on 29th October (21:00pm) at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.

Christos Callow and Ioustina Maciaszeck play the two almost archetypical roles of the man and the woman: He, shortly before his death makes an sui generis insight account of his life: Bafflement, defeat, loneliness but also friendship, love, childhood, family, God, life and death. She is the protagonist in his memory and reacts sometimes unexpectedly in a stage game which moves on with emotion, humor, self-sarcasm and plot twists. Intercalary as necessary building materials of the action or coherence  as one hears the songs of Gregoriou a cappella signed by Christos Callow or accompanied by one violin which plays Ioustina Maciaszeck. Relevant intercalary and necessary mission has the Video projection directed by Evangelos Callow with participation of Thalia Koundourakis, Maria Bondoukas, Lina Damanis, Ioanna Pitaoulis and Marina Tsiamandas. The stage settings and costumes design of the play were made by Anna Macherianakis.

Christos Callow who returned from the National Theatre of London where he played at the ‘Sunset at the Villa Thalia’ by Alexi Kaye Campbell and directed by Simon Godwin now meets the director Anna Sotrini and the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.
Anna Sotrini who also signs the light design (besides the direction with the assistance of Ioanna Pitaoulis) and the dramatic adaptation, faces the different parts of the narration and the protagonist’s memory, as “a homogeneous mosaic of a story for a man who narrates his life’s material little while before ‘the end’ ”.
A poet ,herself, as well as theatrical director of non theatrical plays, Sotrini has been involved with dramatic adaptation since 1994 and direction of large range literature pieces, which involves from stage metaphor of “Lambros” by Dionisios Solomos to “Pittsiburgo” by Soti Triandafillou.
• The “Drawing Block” premiers on 29th of October at the Cacoyannis Foundation for twelve consecutive evenings until 9th of November 2016. Performace time: 21:00pm.
