“Eroton Atelon” CAVAFY | Art exhibition by Andreas Karayan

The Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the House of Cyprus, have organized the art exhibition of the works of Andreas Karayan, entitled “Eroton Atelon” Cavafy. From Tuesday 3 until Sunday 15 March, 2015.
 
At the opening of the Exhibition on Tuesday the 3rd of March 2015, at 20:00, the introduction will be made by Dr. Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan, art historian and art critic, Officier des Artes et des Lettres, whilst the composer and opera singer Nicholas Leventis will interpret Cavafy’s trilogy September 1903, December 1903, January 1904 with Marios Kazas at the piano.
 
Andreas Karayan was born in Nicosia in 1943 and received his degree in medicine in 1967 from the University of Athens. He then travelled to London where he abandoned his medical studies in order to study drawing at Camberwell and the Central School of Art. Following this he studied etching in Germany and lived for quite a while in Berlin. He had his first exhibition in Athens, at the “Ora” Gallery, in 1978. He represented Cyprus at the Venice Biennale (2001) and the Cairo Biennale (2006). Along with his art he also became involved in journalism and cinema and theatre criticism and he has published three autobiographical books: “Alithis Istoria” (Kastaniotis, 2008), “Anithikes Istories” (Gavrielides, 2011) and “Skoteines Istories” (Estia, 2013). He was awarded the Cyprus State Prize for a Novel 2012 for “Anithikes Istories”. In 2007, following a request from the Library of Alexandria, he created a series of works with Alexandrian themes which were then displayed in the Library. He lives and works in Nicosia, Alexandria and Athens.
