“The American” by Alexandros Papadiamantis with Thanasis Sarantos (translated in Greek sign language)

“Ithikon Akmeotaton” theatre company following the four years of great success for the dramatized novel “The American” by Alexandros Papadiamantis, presents the performance at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, on Sunday 29 December 2013, at 20:00.

In the play entitled “The American” which came alive on stage in December 2009, Thanasis Sarantos as the narrator, performs a persona of Papadiamantis, peers at the action and “shifts” into all the characters he narrates, with the contribution of the music composed by Lampros Pigounis and performed live on stage by Giorgos Tzafettas. Moreover, this time the performance is translated in the Greek sign language by Antonis Christoforou.

It is a theatrical adaptation of the homonymous classic novel by Alexandros Papadiamandis that involves an actor and a musician reminding us the dimensions that human solitude can form as well as the “uncured” suspicion over against whatever unknown or the seemingly strange. The hero is “a stranger in his own world”. However he is neither a stranger nor an American. He is a Greek migrant who following 25 years of absence returns back to his island but no one recognizes him. He wonders on his own alongside the port, the island’s alleys and faces his family house ruins. Only love makes him still hope: the hope that his beloved woman perhaps is still there waiting for him. Just like Odysseus, who came back in order to meet his lost Ithaca into the eyes of the faithful Penelope.
