C. P. Cavafy at Hotel Balkan with Yorgos Chronas

C. P.Cavafy arrives at Hotel Balkans, a lonely hotel nearby the road where spices and tea leaves are sold. He asks for a room for about 48 hours. He is not accompanied by Alekos Segkopoulos. Yorgos Chronas, who works as a receptionist there, gives him the room 17. A quite room with heavy silk curtains.

In that room, under the candle light, the poet listens to the receptionist reading Cavafy’s poems with five pieces of music. Three songs and two Bach’s organ oeuvres. A black tie, a mourning sign on receptionist’s sleeve and the miracle of Cavafy’s poems.

A performance full of poetry, music and lost friends’ echoes coming from the old radio days. A journey that began from the 56th Filippi-Thasos Festival and now comes at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.

Poet and publisher Yorgos Chronas selects to read and creates his unique atmosphere in the form of a peculiar “open” single-act play that evolves differently every day, according to the audience’s and receptionist’s mood.
