Writing Workshop Theatre Play with Elena Penga

The writer and theater director Elena Penga will hold Workshop called Writing Theatre Play at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.

A lesson of introduction to the rules governing the structure of theatre plays.

We learn terminology associated with writing a play, what they are themed, plot, conflict, development, solution, heroes, how do the scenery works, music, video, costumes when someone writes a play for the stage.

Everyone involved through dialogue chooses a theme or a story that wants to work. Through the course, exercises, coaching, readings and scenes, driven to complete one act play set from 2 to 7 persons and short duration.

Moreover, there will be discussions and reports on classical or modern plays of world literature, as in the works at this present time are found in theaters of Athens.

ELENA PENGA
Born in Saloniki, Greece, Elena Penga studied Philosophy & Theater at Wesleyan University, CT (BA), and Screen/Playwriting at the University of Southern California (MA). She started her work as theatre artist involved in the experimental theatre scene of downtown NYC.  In the early 90s she returned to Greece, and continued making new work for the theatre.

Primarily a playwright, member of the Greek Playwrights Guild, she also writes fiction & screenplays, and directs. It has been published & extensively reviewed. She has been guest at the Biennale of Young Artists, Lisbon (1994), the Bay Area Playwrights Festival in San Franscisco (1995), the Bonner Biennale of New European Plays in Germany (1998), Belgrade International Theatre Festival (1998), Theatertreffen in Berlin (2001), Gessneralle Theater of Zurich (2002), Verse Waar Festival, Holland (2003), International Monodrama Festival Fujairah in UAE (2005) and Menagerie Theatre Company of Cambridge, UK (2006). She teaches playwrighting at the University of Patras, ITI, Athens, and National Center of Books, Athens.

NARCISSUS, new play presented by the International Festival of Athens in the summer of 2011.  This new monologue is published by Queich-Verlag, Berlin, in German, Greek and English in 2011. WHO ARE OUR NEW FRIENDS, Nefeli Publications, 2006. Has been produced by The National Theatre of Northern Greece, directed by Aleksandr Popovski. In English, it received a Staged Reading in London, Alan Bates Theatre.  It has also been translated in French and Italian. GORKY’S WIFE, published in Greek by Analogio Publications, Athens, 2005. In English, it has been produced in NYC at the Present Company in 1999 as a main stage production.

Official entry at the Bay Area Playwrights’ Festival, San Francisco.  In Athens, it was presented for 16 performances in 2011 in Kinitiras Studio. NELLY’S TAKES HER DOG FOR A WALK, Nefeli Publications, 2003. Has been produced by the Municipal Theatre of Saloniki. It has been translated in English and Italian. Official entry at Fujairah Festival in UAE. WHEN THE GO-GO DANCERS DANCE, published by Nefeli Publications, 2002. Translated in Dutch, is published in NIEUWE EUROPESE EENAKTARS (2005), International Theatre & Film Books, Holland. In Greek, it has been presented in Athens, Saloniki, Komotini.  In Dutch, it also toured Holland. Official entry at Verse Waar Festival, Breda, Holland. It has also been translated in German. 3-0-1 METAFORES, published by Nefeli Publications, 2000. It has been commissioned and produced by the National Theatre in Athens, and was directed by the playwright etc. PHAIDRA OR ALCESTIS LOVE STORIES, commissioned by the European Cultural Center for Greek Drama in Delfi, presented in Delfi outdoor theatre, July 2007.  The play has been translated in German by Torsten Israel, and in English by the playwright. HIS ONLY JOURNEY IN LIFE, screenplay for feature length Greek film, directed by Lakis Papastathis, received best picture award in Saloniki Film Festival (2001). Official entry at Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2012 she received the Ouranis Award of the Greek Academy of Letters for her book Tight Belts and Other Skin.
