«Prima Materia» – Nova Melancholia

«Prima Materia» – Nova Melancholia

In the sense of prima materia, the raw material which the Alchemists were trying to “transmute” into gold, Carl Jung acknowledged the Unconscious. For him, the whole alchemistic tradition was nothing more than a metaphor of every Alchemist’s personal process to his spiritual and philosophical transformation.

The “Prima Materia” performance is inspired by the alchemistic tradition and attempts to investigate the dark space of (personal) Power, looking for – again, in today’s Greece – a new way to the gold.

Having as a guide the vibrant beauty of the baroque aesthetics, we are led in a choreographed game of transformations creating a queer scenery, a place of odd creatures and an encounter with the particular primae materiae of every single spectator.

The performance was presented in a prime workshop form in June 2011 in DasArts / Master of Theatre, of the investigatory postgraduate course for performance, of the Amsterdam Fine Arts University.
