RUSSIAN ROULETTE by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

RUSSIAN ROULETTE
By Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
“The Bear”, “A Marriage Proposal”, “On the harmful effects of tobacco”

The Regional Municipal Theatre of Roumeli presents the play “Russian Roulette” by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. It concerns the well-known one-act plays “The Bear”, “The Proposal”, “On the harmful effects of tobacco”, in which the Russian author deals with the relationship among people of different sex, presenting vividly and with great humour the comical situations, but also the minor tragedies hidden behind men’s and women’s relations.

A few words about the play:
“Russian Roulette” is, just like love, an exceptionally “arousing” and dangerous game with unpredictable consequences, imbued with the bittersweet and subversive humour of the outstanding Russian writer.

In these masterly one-act plays, Chekhov shows off the tragic comedy of human existence in the lightest way, almost like a farce. Being a profound connoisseur of the human soul and a physician himself, he looks into the ruthless, eternal conflict of the two sexes, only to eventually reveal its vanity and absurdity. Chekhov’s “small” heroes are ready for great deeds! Entrenched behind their giant egoism and behind miserable social conventions, they quarrel and duel over trivial things, even being at risk themselves. In fact, what they desperately crave for is the right to happiness.

With the intense action, the sharp dialogue and sarcastic humour Dr Chekhov winks at us: Ladies and gentlemen the way you live and fall in love is “awful” Champagne!
