“Black writing on white background”

Michael Cacoyannis Foundation hosts a performance based on the real story for the human strength, the optimism and the will to live.

“I am a hero. It is very easy to be a hero. When you have neither hands nor legs – you are either hero or dead.

When you do not have parents – count on your own hands or legs.
And be a hero.
When you do not have either hands or legs and (besides all these) you made it to come to this world being an orphan – that settles it. You are obliged to be a hero until the end of your life.
Otherwise just die.
I am a hero. I just do not have another choice”.

Ruben was born in the former Soviet Union; his mother was the daughter of the General Officer of the Spanish Communist Party; Due to a medical mistake he became physically handicapped. After the delivery, saying to his mother that he is dead they settled him in an orphan asylum for disabled people. He was doomed… but he fought. He fought for his life – for his dignity – for his right to be human. He managed to overcome superstitions and he crossed frontiers. He met a lot of people in the orphan asylum who lied in his memory and became heroes of the play “Black letters on white background”.
