Euripides’ MEDEA, “MEDEA – DARK MATTER” | By the theater group CONXOBANX | Direction: Chryssa Georganta

The Greek theater group CONXOBANX presents on Sunday, 19th and Monday, 20th of April 2015, the theater performance «MEDEA – DARK MATTER» directed by Chryssa Georganta in Greek and Spanish, in a modern approach. The performance was presented for the first time in March 2014, in the theater CONDE DUQUE, in Madrid, in the festival of ELLAS CREAN, an event organised by the Comunidad de Madrid, and the Conde Duque theatre. Theodoros Stephanopoulos translated the work from ancient Greek and Adrian Bautista Gascón made the version in spanish. The performance is held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of Spain in Athens and the Cervantes Institute of Athens.

The director Chryssa Georganta notes: “Euripides’ Medea was written in a time of crisis of Democracy and Public Speech, just like the one we experience nowadays. In time of crisis, a deep and intense crisis of values emerges. The marginalization of people, the state terror and the intimidation, the xenophobia, the extreme behaviors, the intense sense of violence, apathy, violation of democratic liberties, meaning a crack in the Universe Harmony. Under these circumstances Medea -Dark Matter is lost in her passions, ready for any kind of violence. From the abyss of her soul, the “shadow” inside is forced to reveal itself and is expressed uncontrollably, extreme.

The approach of the myth on this performance, expresses the need for transcendence, resource to nonnegotiable values, like the value on the vows to the Gods that Medea invokes, defends, and reminds us, as with her tragic act she is detached from the world of people and returns to the Myth. On the four points of the horizon, defined by the gods, and under the dome of the ether, Medea is defeated in her battle against the spirit, yet as a descendant of the Sun, the Light, she looks at it straight in the eye. She becomes the punishing hand of God. In an absolute and tragic way, she violently impose us the obligation to confront the belief that hubris is always followed by Punishment.”
