“Life is like the theater. She wants everyone.
Others are born leading actors
and others are born extras”
A.I.

After the sold out performances at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki and at the ransacked Villa of Alexandros Iola, the Theatrical Performance «Alexandros Iolas» by Christoforos Antoniadis will be presented in another version, in the Specially Configured Underground Level in the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation on Wednesday, April 22nd to Sunday, April 26th, 2015, daily at 21:30.

Art, love, dance, intrigue, untold secrets, painting, words that characterized his life. Picasso, Cavafy, Ernst, Callas, Warhol, Mercouri, Cocteau, Garbo, Roosevelt, Akrithakis, are some of many names that marked his path. Illicit dealer of antiquities, pedophile, pimp, drug dealer, son of Satan, are the accusations that sounded in his ears.
Really, who was Alexander Iolas in reality?

A man who always lived on stage, first as a dancer, then as an artistic director of Ballet and finally as an art impresario. An Alexandrian, he loved the contradiction, living both in palaces and in the market. This combination of folk and cosmopolitan, refined and cheap, marked him. They called him a “Great surrealist”, and he indeed lived and died in a surreal way. In the end just a mess, nor will, nor collection. Only bitterness, loneliness and the complaint that Greece wounded him, refusing to accept 10,000 works that he wished to leave as a legacy for the new generation. This was Alexander Iolas, a living sculpture (as he was characterised by Andy Warhol), with a carved inscription: “Do not see art with your eyes, but with your soul.”
