Comic Exhibition by Tassos Papaioannou & Ilias Kyriazis – One cigarette time

The city of Xanthi has been well known for its tobacco since 1715. Even since 1860, tobacco plantations and commerce have been a means of economical as well as cultural growth for the region.

Because of this part of the city’s history, the comic exhibition “One cigarette time” by Tassos Papaioannou and Ilias Kyriazis, was presented during the 2nd Xanthi Comedy Festival (2012). The series consists of 41 stories on a free subject that allows the creators to experiment on different styles and techniques on non-related, one-page stories.

What tied the stories to one another and made the series stand out, was that each story had to begin with lighting up a cigarette and end by extinguishing it.

Love stories, break-ups, moments of dramatic tension and hilarious, surreal outbursts… all happening in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette.

This very exhibition marks the start of a collaboration between the Xanthi Comedy Festival and the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, making this exhibition the first parallel event of the festival in Athens. Episode 42 of the “One cigarette time” series, that was never published, is also exhibited.
