Stratos Tzitzis. 45 Square Metres, Directed by Stratos Tzitzis. 79′. Greece, 2011
In today’s climate of financial insecurity, with a youth generation rendered incapable of leaving their family homes on 600 Euro wages, a young saleswoman, Christina, decides to move out and rent her own apartment, surpassing her economic means.
Alienated from her familiar world by this transgression, she begins to see life from a different perspective, a liberal awaking (or “a sensitivity”) represented by Fotis, the young man who rented the apartment before her and whose personal belongings have been left behind.
Encouraged by the poetic notes of this young stranger, Christina struggles to keep the apartment and not return to her mother’s house. She takes on a second, evening job to make ends meet but in the end, utterly exhausted by her efforts, abandons both.
Left penniless, she must finally give up the apartment. As she packs the little she has, Fotis arrives to get his things. The person she encounters is nothing like what she imagined, as he seems a well-to-do young man who at the first sign of difficulty, returned to his parent’s home.
Christina nevertheless engages him through the perception she had created. Her faith in him gives hope that together they will achieve what they could not alone.
