THE HOUSE of Michalis Pieris

THE HOUSE of Michalis Pieris

House of Cyprus  – Cultural Affairs Department of the Embassy of Cyprus in Athens and Michael Cacoyannis Foundation present the play of Cypriot poet, writer, translator as well as academic professor Michalis Pieris “The House” in direction of Yorgos Michailidis.

It is a socio – psychological tragedy, a poetic essay on the main issues of life as well as the arts, which discourses the dialectic relation of old – new through an active theatrical play with integrated references to Pinter as well as Pirandello.

The play’s hero, writer, fights and resists strongly against the intervening person of a big construction company which demands his family house, which as an experienced space for him has soul and feelings, concentrating all the memories of his entire life. Therefore he refuses to give his house quid pro quo, despite the oppositional opinion of his young wife, who doesn’t want to stay there, continuing a life of hypocrisies and compromise, since she feels the necessity to assert her right to exit.

Thus the house of “memory” is being transformed during the play’s development into an ark, as well as into a jail, a tube leading even to death.

More than a tale of moral values, the play is essentially an essay on art, theatre within theatre, as the protagonist-writer perceives it.
