“Mermaid, little Mermaid” by “Prassein-Aloga”
The Play
Inspired by H.V. Andersen’s well known fairy tale.
A one woman performance, a poetic show for all ages. The deep love that the little mermaid will feel for the prince will make her shine like the moon.
A air of conjoint high heel shoes is the prince’s boat. In the shipwreck they come apart into two pieces that then the mermaid keeps as memento of her beloved. When she has her legs formed these shoes will be her vehicle on her way to femininity.
The performance
An imaginative setting that transforms, puppets of different sizes stand out for their ductility and vivid colors. The play’s action and authentic music takes the viewer into the magic world of fairytale, with humor and consideration.
The three main characters of the play are direct moving puppets which are in dialogue with the actress on stage. Therefore, the mermaid expresses herself in two substances. On one hand as a puppet, that is her outer image and on the other hand as an actress that is her psychological, inner side. The witch is an imposing, funny creature designed with mappet techniques. The mermaid’s three friends are objects that play with the senses. Her mermaid sisters are finger puppets. To conclude, the moon is a primitive mask.
The Group of Visual Puppet Theater
The group of Visual Puppet Theater “Prassein Aloga” was founded in 1997 by Emmanouela Kapokaki, graduate of E.S.N.A.M. ( Ecole Superieure National des Arts de la Marionette, Charleville-Mezieres, France). It produces Visual Theater performances in which the action is given both by actors and puppets, subsidized by the Greek Ministry of culture. Its shows approach the viewer in a different manner than that of regular theater. The team organizes seminars on theatrical puppets throughout the year and also constructs puppets of any kind made by order. Since today the team has present 14 different productions with different direction of reaches in Greece and international festivals.
