Once again this year, Karpos’ hands-on film workshops for all ages are returning to the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation! Karpos’ many years of experience in designing and running film workshops for students of all ages are brought to the MCF’s facilities, which feature professional technical equipment. This gives children the opportunity to experiment and acquire practical filmmaking skills. It is a unique opportunity for students of all ages to create their own projects using real filmmaking equipment!

Below you can find the school workshops on offer. They combine new technologies and filmmaking with the school curriculum and are suitable for students from kindergarten through upper secondary school.
PHOTO COMIC | Primary and Lower Secondary School
Can we tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end using 12 photographs and captions? How is language connected to storytelling, photography, and film? Students learn about the power of images and the basic principles of story structure. Working in small groups, they develop their own version of an assigned theme, become familiar with the roles of director and photographer, and write the dialogue together.
REPORTAGE | Grades 4-6 of Primary School, Lower and Upper Secondary School
How is a real television news report made? How is it related to documentary filmmaking? How and why are the camera and microphone set up in a particular way? Students are introduced to the processes and roles involved in a professional shoot. They take turns performing every role in the crew and learn through practice how to formulate and ask questions like real journalists.
PIXILATION (ANIMATION) | Grades 4-6 of Primary School, Lower and Upper Secondary School
Pixilation is a form of stop-motion animation in which the students themselves take on the role of the moving objects. They learn about sequential shooting, pose for photographs, and determine the pace and form of their film. In this way, students are introduced to the wider world of animation, understand the basic principles behind it, and practice by creating an original story in which everyone performs and takes photographs together.
SOUND DESIGN | Grades 5-6 of Primary School, Lower and Upper Secondary School
Students are introduced to the secrets of creating a film’s soundtrack. They learn how to break down human activities into the individual sounds that make them up. They watch selected clips and work in groups to decide what kinds of sounds they would like to add, suggesting sounds they can create themselves or find online. Finally, they put together a complete “performance”, paying attention to flow, volume, and rhythm.
ONE OBJECT, FIVE PERSPECTIVES |Grade 5 of Primary School, Lower and Upper Secondary School
How can an image acquire different meanings? What makes one image remind us of an advertisement and another of a fairy tale? How many ways can an object be photographed? Working in small groups, students take on the roles of director, photographer, and models. They stage photographs using codes, symbols, and stereotypes of television, the internet, and film. This activity stimulates imagination and humor while encouraging teamwork and discussion.
ONE BOOK, THREE DIRECTORS | Lower and Upper Secondary School
How can three different directors tell the same story in different ways, inspired by the same book? By watching excerpts from three important films, students observe and analyze each director’s approach. They then take on different roles, rehearse, perform, and film the same scene in their own way.
PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT | Kindergarten, Primary, Lower and Upper Secondary School
Children learn the secrets of portrait photography, as well as how to position their model. Using professional equipment, they learn about camera placement and the use of lenses and lighting. At the end, we create a digital collage featuring all the class portraits.
