Before the Mysterious Lady got a voice
1st Silent Film Festival -A tribute to the American Silent Films
Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in cooperation with the Cultural Affairs Office of The American Embassy in Athens presents the 1st Silent Movies Festival a tribute to the American Silent Films which opens on Thursday September 30 and it will last until Tuesday October 12, with the support of Studio, Parallel Circuit (Paralilo Kikloma).
The films are a choice of Michael Cacoyannis, who suggests 19 of his favorite ones that were filmed in the US, in the beginning of cinema. Black and white images, intense acting, explanatory cards that interrupt action, no sound at all thought accompanied by live music, the festival will take us back to the numerous Buster Keatons gags, Charlie Chaplins unlimited sensitivity, the divines Greta Garbo unsolved mystery, and to the other great stars of this era, the “Glasses Character” Harold Loyd , the “Latin Lover” Rodolfo Valentino, the special directors Griffith, Niblo and Brown. Beautiful films with magnificent techniques, despite the early years of cinema, with extremely melodramatic or funny acting, thriller or romances, an era mosaic and adventures will offer us a tour in this autonomous form of expression, the silent films that bloomed in the beginning of the 20th century.
The festival opens on 30/9, with a lecture by the distinguished American professor and a specialist in silent films, Mark Garrett Cooper, who will answer questions, while at the last screening on October 12 Michael Cacoyannis speech will close the festival. The screenings will be accompanied by live music, just as it happened in those days.
