GREEK MYTHOLOGY – Cosmogony and Titanomachy, Feats of Gods and Heroes with the storyteller Sasa Voulgari

From where did the Monsters come, what is borne by the Ocean and how do the great heroes travel to the Underworld? With which beast do Hercules, Perseus and Theseus battle?  How could someone pass between Scylla and Charybdis and what is the answer to the riddle of the Sphinx?  And what’s more, how truly divine were the apples of the Hesperides, how many teeth did the Graeae have altogether, what does Mermaid hair look like and where was Pegasus, the winged horse, borne from…

With stories that change each time and a simple stage setting, as is fit for the telling of myths, using a voice, song, improvisation and original musical instruments, a storyteller does her utmost to bring these mythical images to life before our very eyes.

And a few words about Sasa Voulgari:

I am Sasa Voulgari, the storyteller…
I was born and raised in Karditsa, and I lived and breathed stories until I began to narrate fairytales all the time – a blabber-mouth I was!! I have been telling stories since 1993, for over 20 years now, since a time when there were no professional storytellers in Greece to be heard of!

I adore children and so I studied psychology and pedagogy and ever since I can remember myself, I have been around children, playing, creating, learning…
I also adore museums which is why I created many, many programmes with stories about many, many museums, such as that of  Greek Folk Art, Cycladic Art, the Benaki – Museum of Islamic Art, the Goulandris Natural History Museum – Gaia Centre and more.

I was the first storyteller on Greek Television and I narrated 13 Greek folk tales on ET1, in 1998. Those stories were shown a number of times and in the meantime many children grew up but they still come and listen to me.
For over 20 years I have been telling my stories in schools and in libraries to audiences of all ages – from preschool to High school and even Universities!
I never learn the stories “by heart”!!!

Each time I tell the tales in my own words and as such I never know exactly what is going to happen during each session:  it’s as if I am rebuilding the story each time, along with those who are listening. That is exactly the way of the old traditional storytellers, whom I would like to resemble in style.
Anyway, it’s much more fun that way!!!  Each time the stories are different and full of surprises which fills me with new ideas, words and images. I am inspired by what is happening at the time I am telling the stories!

When I tell my stories, I often like to sing and to adapt my voice to the particular character I am portraying at that moment and to play musical instruments from around the world, to move my arms and my legs and my whole body, as if I were dancing!
Oh! And I also like to draw my fairytales so that I can remember them better!
Above all I enjoy your good company when you come to listen to one of my stories!!!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Children should be a minimum of 5 years of age and must absolutely be accompanied by an adult! The stories are enjoyable for all ages so anybody who wishes to hear them is welcome, even if they are not accompanied by children!!!
