“Greeks on uncertain flight”
“Greeks on uncertain flight”
A documentary by Abdolreza Konharouz
A beautiful country, a historical place with ancient culture in the verge of bankruptcy. The people are like numb parts of a body. They agonize and try to recover from the dreadful financial crisis which they are currently experiencing. However, it is apparent that they have lost the spirit to fight or even talk about this situation, like they should do.
The liveliness which existed before, now has almost faded under the shadow of the current events. Homeless people are everywhere and the society experiences an uncertainty for the future. Young and old, scientists, academics, people from the arts faculty, everyday people, the retired, students, and even foreigners who live in this place, experience intensely this situation which will probably affect the future generations!
The capital, the former centre of entertainment for the residents and the tourists, is now vacant! The freshness of the past years is lost and the historical landscape with so much energy now looks like a dead city.
However, there is always hope. Organizations are trying to help the people and act with as much forces they have, especially those nights when there is a need. The middle class endures and believes that there will be a light in this “darkness”. With a positive spirit from the young generations to change the situation along with optimistic view of the future, they believe that every difficulty, instead of bringing them to their knees, will make them stronger.
Director’s Note:
“When I left Greece, couple years ago, I had never thought that one day I will sympathize with those people and that I will share my protest due to the fact that I lived there for 11 years.
With all those events which occurred since the financial crisis came about, discussing with friends and acquaintances from Greece, I would listen that each one described his pain about the crisis in a different way. Watching the events occurring in Athens, I felt that I had to be there, in Syntagma square.
I listened to contradictory news by the foreign news agencies and by the people who commented based on their knowledge about Greece, for this place on which all the history and the culture of Europe is based.
All these questions made me create this movie, which I believe is great honor and pride to offer. It is a small tribute to a place which I feel like my home country while it taught me to love the art of cinema.
Greece may have reached bankruptcy such as other countries in the past and probably in the future, but the hope and the aspiration do not fade so easily because Greece has beauties and capabilities which every country would envy. On this way, life in Greece is not just misery.”
