“Ephemera” a play by Nikos Dionysios

The theatrical performance “EPHEMERA” by Nikos Dionysios is going to be hosted at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation’s Theatre Hall for one and only night, on Wednesday 15th of May 2013, at 21:00. The performance is accompanied with poems by Harold Pinter, Margaret Atwood and Dimitris Nikolareizis and it is directed and choregraphed by Nikos Dionysios.

“Ephemera” is the scientific term for a group of insects which are born, live and die in 24 hours. This title exemplifies the basis of the play which is Genesis – Love – Death. It is a vision of symbols. It is about the Man that tries to survive in an electronic life.

This is a story about a Man who feels trapped. His solution is to start his life over again. He believes with his past experience and knowledge he will be able to create the new life he wants, to be free. The renaissance begins. Various characters come into his life. They parade in front of him, pulling him back into “reality”. The dream transforms into a nightmare. The Man becomes confused as his attempt at freedom becomes a struggle. As the play progresses, it slowly becomes more like a circus, and the Man more like a clown. Whenever we think we are seeing reality, a new episode cancels out what we think. Finally, the climax retracts the whole “dream”.

Together, the movement and choreography, expose the bizarre concept of our world. The movement and dance in “Ephemera” replace the Chorus as we know it in Greek Tragedy. The music is based on mechanic and electronic elements. It is a major part of the production and interacts with the characters and leads them into different situations.
