Giorgos Kakoulidis presents at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation the painting exhibition “The truth that does not exist”. The exhibition, which consists of 25 artworks, of different sizes, with oil and acrylic colors, will take place from 19th of November to 8th of December 2012.
“My grandfather was a sculptor, my father a painter (Dimitris Kakoulidis). Trying to interpret their work, I found my self in front of words and colors. I grew up among painters and poets, going from one atelier to another. From the caravans of artists that passed in front of my eyes, i reminisce Michael Catsaros, Alexis Akrithakis, Costas Tachtsis, Yiannis Tsarouchis, Giorgos Mayroidis, Minos Argyrakis, Nikos Carouzos, Leyteris Papadopoulos, Giorgos Sikeliotis, Yannis Papadellis”.
The art historical Dimitris Vassos underlines, preceding the exhibition (extracts): The painter Giorgos Cacoulidis does not wade through a so called intellectual tradition. His need to express through painting the world of his idols, is the base line of his artistic act. He does not possess the stress of a pioneer, as well as worrying to be included to any painting tradition. He detests anything “intellectual”, yet he doesn’t claim any pretence of popularity. What he surely does in a superlative degree: he blinks to us, he exposes his universe, and he expresses emotions.
His field of work is straightforward: with complete kindness and elusive sensitivity along with tenderness approaches the world of madness.
Mystical hybrid figures go through his entire work, composing an eternal stressful dance, which does lack neither in tension and passion nor in horror.
He resembles a humanist painter, however his technique clearly refers to the wonderings of abstract art. His heroes appear as ultimate protagonists, yet they don’t stop claiming forcefully and stressfully their place in their universe, intensifying the sense of instability and agony which characterises his work.
He attempts the illustration of madness itself as a recording of creative and dramatic contrasts, as a comparison of blasting and competitive colours which dont have points of getaway and relaxation.
Giorgos Cacoulidis is in the first place, known for his poetic and literary work. Strong personality, with important presence in literary circles, he has been awarded with the National Prize Cavafis. Since he was a child he used painting as a communication code.
During the last ten years he has organized 5 personal exhibitions (Agathi 2001, Ersi’s Gallery 2003, Booze Cooperativa 2010, Pontoporos Parou 2010, Ianos 2011) with great success. Giorgos Cacoulidis was born in Athens in 1956. At a very young age he embarked on merchant ships. He made his first appearance in literature in 1979, with the poetry edition Liberty (reference to his sea trips), from Kimena publications of Philippou Vlachou.
He has published 13 poetry collections with Agra, Kastanioti and Exadas editions, 6 novels (Kastanioti, Exadas, Livani and Kedros publishing), including the short stories Parthenis’ syndrome and Omonias’ Siren, the work of fiction The moment’s union and the novel collection About rogue. In addition, 2 plays: King’s eyes and Baltasar spoke (Patakis and Parousia editions respectively), and the tribute Mrs. Carousou’s black race (Kastaniotis).
The composers Thanos Mikroutsikos, Nikos Kypourgos and Stamos Semsis have converted his poetry into music. The Composers’ Union has recently published a collective volume of his poetry to date (Poetry 1979-2012). In 1994 he was honored with the National Prize Cavafis in Alexandria of Egypt.
