“Images are passing before my eyes”

Do fairytales come alive?

Old fairytales “discovered” the science fiction, the robots, the space journeys, and the ” extra ” terrestrial, the secret life beneath the sea surface, the super – heroes, the exciting adventures!!!

What people were doing before the invention of cinema? Who was making wonderful images for them in order to make them dream and travel? How were they able to learn about distant places, strange creatures, and exotic habits without documentaries?

Well, what if all those things used to be done by Storytellers?

A successful narration needs more or less whatever a good movie needs: “scenario”, “direction”, so as the narrator to “animate” the story, the right “set”, even if that, once, used to be a fireplace, and of course, image. However, as far as the narration case is concerned, image is created by the storyteller. And this is created with his or her language and voice as main tools.

Once upon a time human beings used to create their own “films” with the eyes of their imagination.

Sasa Voulgari creates a new program especially for Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. With simple and imaginative set props, makeshift musical instruments, traditional as well as original stories she presents her narrations for all ages.

Every single time different stories and every month on a different subject.

The new oral narration program for children “Images are passing before my eyes” with the storyteller Sasa Voulgari is available for organised, morning visits of schools upon arrangement with teachers/directors.

HMM! HOW DID IT COME OUT?
My name is Sasa and I am a storyteller. Stories are everywhere in my life. They leap out of heart, my mouth, my clothes and my shoes, literally from everywhere and I cannot by no means to stop them. They are that many, that I have no other option but constantly narrating them here and there, to young and older ones in order to get some peace, wherever I find willing ears to listen to them, and I always keep looking around me and from what I see or what I hear, oops! There the inspiration comes!

There are some eyes soooo wide open and some ears soooo outstretched that sometimes I do believe that humans do eat up the stories I narrate. However, I do believe that stories truly have taste and colours, music, laughter, songs and tears, yes they do have everything! Though, how can I say that kind of things? That tales laugh and cry. That some of them are red , deep red to be honest! While others light blue, or others smell like freshly ironed clothes and others as if something is being burned! There are some stories with cherry flavour – can you believe it?  And some others which are like fluffy ice-cream, who could say things like that?

Hmm! Things like that cannot be said! This is why I say my stories and then I look around me carefully in order to see those who were listening to them. Are their eyes still wide open? Are they still focused on the story? Anyhow, do they feel as if they have just seen the most wonderful, the most marvelous, and the most adventurous film they have ever watched?

Then I feel happy and I dream of my next story
Well, keep in close touch with me!

The “Tales Screening Program” will soon be announced!

Sasa Voulgari is a psycho-pedagogue, with a specialization and great experience on educational and creative programs for kids occupation at all the developmental stages form preschool age to High School. She is well known for her long activity on the traditional art of narration. She belongs to the pioneers of neo-narration, with constant professional presence since 1993, having an audience which follows her for her narrations. With her constant presence and the planning of interdisciplinary programs she has established narrations at Museum Halls.

Sasa Voulgari does not memorize her material following the traditional narration pattern. Her main concern is not to modernize the traditional material but “rebaptize” it into a different way of life, revitalizing the old stories with respect and fully aware about their structure and their “traditionally” formed character.

Her long experience leads as well as allows her, this year, a different approach of her material, even more improvising, with experimentations which refer to a more contemporary form of performance.
