The architect of MCF Cultural Center, Vassilis Sgoutas, proves that Greeks, still, shine
It is him who shaped and brought into existence the vision of Michael Cacoyannis for a cultural centre of high standards, expressing it through architectural forms. Vassilis Sgoutas, a prominent architect of our country who, among others, has been the leader for the realization of a sophisticated Cultural Centre in order to house the Michael Cacoyannis Foundations activities proves that Greeks have never stopped shine globally, making experts and wide public admire as well as honor works of theirs, when these originate from that endless Greek genius as well as the complete professional brilliance. Example of this exceptional career for scientist, who during tough and grayish times manages to attract light of recognition on Greece, is the recent Prize award by the International Union of Architects (UIA) which carries the name of Vassilis Sgoutas, former President of the Union.
The Vassilis Sgoutas Prize was launched in 2008. Created on the initiative of the UIA Past President, whose name it carries, it is designed to highlight actions or realisations that contribute in an efficient manner to the struggle against the misery of communities living under the poverty line. It is awarded to architects or teams that have contributed to the significant improvement of the living conditions of the most underprivileged human beings, to their habitat and their environment. Two prizes are awarded, one to an architect, the other to a collectivity, composed of a majority of architects or leaded by an architect.
In 2011 the Vassilis Sgoutas Prize award ceremony took place in Nanjing of China on April 9th, with the attendance of the Greek architect, member of the jury, when, among other honorary distinctions, the prize for individual category was awarded to Fabrizio Carola from Italy, for his lifelong dedication to improving living conditions in a number of countries in Africa through the use of local building materials in a variety of structures that respect local cultures.
