Greece 11… Living in Greece of 2011

By Giorgos Nanouris

Trends demand greeklish, however he writes in English language with Greek letters and dares to decode Greek reality of 2011, through expectations, desires, experiences, but mainly, through emotions of each and every one of us. Giorgos Nanouris, one of the most significant representatives of the new generation in the countrys theatre proceedings, directs as well as acts along with Giorgos Karamichos, Andriana Mpampali and 18 volunteering actors, in the performance Greece 11, which is presented at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation from January 20th 2011. Through 9 scenes, or else, 9 stories and 5 songs, he attempts to illustrate our emotions, living in Greece of today.

Moments, or else, thoughts of our everyday routine, shape – in a different space an alternative performance with prose, songs and music. A performance that, attempts to record the subversions that we all experience in the work place, with our financial income or even within our personal relationships, subversions that Giorgos Nanouris set into the focal point, talking and singing about them on the theatrical stage.

It is a modern approach of satiric theatre, which is being structured around 9 stories, most of which are written by Giorgos Nanouris himself. For this specific performance, Giorgos Karamichos and Olia Lazaridou have written one text each, while part of Kiki Dimoula poem Angelies and a poem of C. P. Cavafy will be used as well.

The reason I initiated working for this performance, was that I wanted to say something about the situation that we all live in. Every time I direct, it is just because of that. Because something has triggered me. And the only way I have is this. I do not have money to spend, nor some power to appear in TV shows yelling. The only way I have to express what I feel for what is happening in my city as well as my country is just this one. Therefore, this is what I can and I actually do.
