“On Sunday, we Have a Wedding”

Theatrical adaptation of the novel by Giannis Xanthoulis

For the 2nd year at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation

Friday and Saturday at 21:30

Premiere on Friday, October 20th

Following the great response from the audience, the performance by the “Her and Them” (Afth kai Aftoi) group returns to the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation (Underground Space) with the play based on the homonymous book by Giannis Xanthoulis, “On Sunday, We Have a Wedding.”

A performance about lost innocence, reminiscing about childhood, and a dive into the past. Seven actors, one musician, and twenty-four roles in a journey from Athens to Evros, from insouciance to adulthood, with intermediate stops at love, laughter, mourning, and joy.

Author’s Note:

The story is set in the early 1950s, a decade I assimilated by observing the post-war provincial world as a child. It was probably my happiest and most crooked decade. Of course, the hero is not me. I am an observer.

In the book, everything starts from today to get lost in an ambiguous yesterday with different sounds, tastes, and expectations. A widow and her eleven-year-old son embark on a journey from Athens to Alexandroupolis, then when the southerners considered it “God’s end.” In a journey made for vacation reasons, as my heroes claim, an unexpected and eventful wedding will become wrapped up in the plot. This is regarding the novel.

However, I never imagined that the “Wedding” would take on a different dimension from that of the book. This is where another, even stranger and more provocative journey begins. For this reason, I thank the theater group “Her and Them,” which attempted a second reading of “On Sunday, we have a wedding” from their own perspective.

With my best wishes,

Giannis Xanthoulis

A Few Words about the Group:

The “Her and Them” (“Afth kai Aftoi”) group was created by Spyros Anastasinis, Eleni Alifragki, and Andreas Psyllias. The baptism of fire came in 2017 at the competitive Duet Yourself Festival of the Alpha Theatρε, where their first work was presented, specifically the first 15 minutes of the adaptation of Argyris Eftaliotis’s “Vourkolakas.”

This was what prompted the work, two years later, to become a complete performance which was presented to the public. At that point, “Her and Them” became a quartet when Tassos Halas joined the team. Their next performance took place in 2022 when they presented Andreas Karkavitsas’s “Zitianos.”

In the spring of 2023, at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, they continued their beloved occupation and dramatized yet another novel, the work of the great storyteller Giannis Xanthoulis, the book “On Sunday, We Have a Wedding.” The performance was a great success, and in October, it returns to the same venue with the blessings of the author.

In June 2023, they participated with the performance “Vourkolakas” in a two-day event by the “European Anti-Violence Network,” aiming to raise public awareness about domestic violence against women, sexual violence, and their relationship with our patriarchally structured society.
