This play, written in 1941 in Finland, where he was exiled Brecht describes, in an allegorical way, the rise of Hitler to the chancellors office, the gradual corruption of all representatives of society, as well as the corruption of the alliances and various interests, propaganda and the distortion of reality, the degeneration of the value system, and ultimately the moral degeneration of a totalitarian society.
The metaphor is based on historical events and real persons after the Crash of ’29 and global impact, led to the creation and rise of Nazism with results and irreversibly sealed bloody history. Brecht conveys the world of gangsters all the mechanisms that lead to the emergence and establishment of illegal and authoritarian powers. In the midst of a huge economic crisis, the once peaceful city of Chicago fell into the hands of a gang, even with the blessings of both the official authority as he and the crowd. Merciless German dramatist describes a monster city, which will only save those who do not know, but what we are they?
Having worked in the past and believing in the work on codes developed among people with common perceptions and actions were looking for a text that expresses our concern today. We think we found it perfectly in this project. It is this point in time may be the only historical reality that has identical characteristics to that for which the text was written.
Brecht proved eerily prophetic.
