by the «Mikros Notos» theatre group
Mikros Notos theatre group brings on stage traditional Greek customs and games children used to play outdoors, in an interactive performance for kids from the age of 3, based on the traditional Greek tale «Mrs. Kali and the 12 months». Starting this November, every Sunday at 12 p.m., a celebration of time, the months and the seasons will be taking place at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. First comes Autumn, with grapes’ gathering, songs, and games that bring us closer to the Winter. Then Spring arrives, with all the joy and the Easter traditions. And the time flies…
Months come and go. They are 12 and Mrs. Kali is the one who meets them all. She knows how to celebrate the gifts each of the months brings and the talents they have, with traditional festivities, songs and dances and games kids used to play out in the courtyard, back in time, in villages and cities all around Greece.
in NOVEMBER: Greek customs and songs for the Autumn, games of winter farmers’ activities
in DECEMBER: Winter traditions, carols from different parts of Greece, games with Goblins, Christmas traditional customs
in JANUARY: Greek customs for the New Year’s Eve that bring luck and joy, Carols
in FEBRUARY: A traditional carnival. Farewell to Winter
in MARCH: Spring welcome, Greek customs for Spring
in April: Easter traditions, popular outdoor games
The director and musician Petros Damoulis re-wrote the traditional tale with a rhyme, bridging rhythms of the past with modern sounds, that bring melodies and sceneries of nature on stage. The music educator Eleni Tsoutsia-Loulaki researched the Greek folklore traditions, Flora Spyrou, philologist, specialized in Drama in Education, designed and taught the traditional customs as interactive theatre games, and Chryssa Diamantopoulou, actor and Artistic Director, integrated all the details to make a whole, interactive performance. They all focused on creating the space and the time for kids to engage, to play with music and theatre, to interact and to express themselves, in a meaningful way.
Taking the path up the hill, Mrs. Kali would never expect to meet old Mr-Time himself. He is the father of the months and the seasons. He has 12 sons. But he is sad, as they are constantly in a fight. There she goes Mrs. Kali, with a special, kind word for each of the 12 months, with praise and love, with an open heart, she highlights each one’s extraordinary skills, their talents, the beauty each one brings, the best each one has to offer.
