at the Exhibition areas of the 1st and 2nd floors

The retrospective mosaic art exhibition, by Catherine Cabourgiannidou-Contogiorgi, presented at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, displays the long history of mosaic art from the classic to the Hellenistic and the Byzantine period, right through to the modern era. In her most recent works, the artist has focused both theme and technique on the various movements related to abstract art.

The exhibition includes marble, enamel, semi-precious stones, glass, plastic, wall-mounts, floor tables, everyday items in color palettes which reflect each era and each thematic.

As noted by the art historian, Prof. Manos Stefanidis, “Catherine Cabourgiannidou-Contogiorgi is a mosaicist who paints pictures and an artist who expresses herself through the use of tiles, producing poetry with unrefined stone and pure color. The proficiency of her designs ensures the functionality of her creations as, behind each one, an invisible architecture can be found”.

The major issues of our times, which are the turbulence and violent uproar on a financial, social and political level, are mirrored in the intense complexity and semiotics of the works.

The art of mosaics is particularly useful in depicting the prevailing atmosphere. Mosaic, as poetry and as an expression of freedom, is combined with the austere rigidity of the material in an expression of true simplicity, which invites us into a reflective dialogue concerning the human adventure.
