Microplastics in Water, Wastewater and the Environment

An event entitled “Microplastics in Water, Wastewater and the Εnvironment” will take place at Michael Cacoyannis Foundation206, Piraeus Str. (near Chamosternas Str.) Tavros, Athens, on Friday 8 November 2019, from 18:00 to 21:00. The event is co-organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Hellenic Open University (EAP) and is mainly addressed to academic structures, public and private entities relevant to the topic and environmental organizations.

Among the speakers of the event are the professors Prof. Dr. Peter Grathwohl (Vice President of Research and Innovation, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen) and Prof. Dr. Christian Laforsch (Vice President for Research, Chairholder Animal Ecology, University of Bayreuth). From Greece we have the participation of Dr. Hrissi Karapanagioti (Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Patras) and Dr  Ioannis K. Kalavrouziotis(Dean- School of Science and Technology, Hellenic Open University) on the occasion of the recent publication of their book entitled “Microplastics in Water and Wastewater” from the Ιnternational Water Association (IWA). The lectures deal with microplastics in the environment, an issue of great concern among the scientific community and the society in general and will present among others, the impact of microplastics in environmental systems and humans.

The event will start with an opening speech by representatives of public entities, an introduction of Professor Dr.Ioannis K. Kalavrouziotisn(Hellenic Open University) and next there will be a presentation of the German Academic Exchange Service about the research landscape of Germany and the DAAD scholarships. The lectures will start with the Associate Professor Dr.Hrissi Karapanagioti followed by the Professors Dr. Peter Grathwohl and Dr. Christian Laforsch. The topics will be open for discussion at the end of the lectures.

No pre-registration is required and the entrance is free. The event is addressed to the students and the employees in the field of environmental sciences but also to all those who are concerned by the keenly debated topic of microplastics in the environment. For those interested, Certificates of attendance will be given from the Hellenic Open University after the event.

The event is funded by the Department for the Promotion of International Research of DAAD.
