Giannis Bezos and Pygmalion Dadakaris star in “Enigma Variations”. An interview that leads to a hard game of truth and at the same time reveals a tender and sensitive world. Sotiris Tsafoulias meets Pygmalion Dadakaris as directors and together, through the play, they come face to face with dichotomy, isolation, human relationships and the eternal mysteries of love.
Story-line:
Abel Znorko (Giannis Bezos) is a Nobel-Prize winning writer who lives alone in Rosvanoi, a small island in the Norwegian Sea, avoiding everything, especially people. Having recently published his 21st book, which has become a huge success, he agrees to give an interview to a journalist called Eric Larsen (Pygmalion Dadakaridis), who has been besieging him for a very long time.
How random was the choice Abel Znorko made to accept this particular journalist and how random was Eric Larsen’s choice in this particular writer?
What connects the two men and what paths will they have to cross and overcome, as the twists and turns come one after the other in a story where the position of the cat and the mouse is constantly changing.
Director’s note :
Dichotomy is perhaps the greatest pandemic of mankind. Human societies have always shown a greater preference for the symbol of division
But if we sit quietly and study what separates us, we will see that there is a common foundation. It is like two people fighting over which of a trees branches is more distinct, ignoring the fact that all the branches have the same starting point, the same trunk.
We are not divided about where we want to go, but about which path we will take in order to get somewhere. Heraclitus believed that the world is created by “fire”, opposites, and the war between opposites, in which he adds: “opposite paths have a single direction – from opposites, the most beautiful harmony is born”.
But what if in each such case we could soberly discern our commonalities? If we could understand that every concept or definition automatically includes the opposite of what its name implies? Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s Enigma Variations is a work that essentially shows us that that which divides us can easily be turned into that which unites us for what other cause than? A better life, governed by unity and love, in its true and universal dimension.
